You missed out one important reason....To seek attention.

It's a feel good factor for you to have a long list of friends on your page and lots of updates and info on your boring life. "look at how sociable I am. I have 1000 friends. I am cool and popular. Be my friend." Ya right. You spend 5 hrs 'farming'.

Another reason why SNS are popular : CHEAP

Just imagine texting or calling everybody what you're doing. Or sending them printed photos. Or emailing them one by one. The time and monetary costs are just enormous... Compared to simply signing up to a website and uploading your stories and pictures.

also I think it's convenient in a way cos you only have to tell the story "once". ;p but the thing is that sometimes you forget who knows (those on your lists) and they suddenly go, "oh about that..." and it takes a second to realise they didn't hear it from you but the SNS.

there was this fiasco when a colleague updated her facebook status describing a fun, mildly illegal thing she did whilst on holiday in europe. a co-worker saw it and alerted the boss.. who immediately smsed her to remove it.. why? perhaps for fear of company losing reputation. hope this didn't ruin her holiday.

The more you should not join any SNS since you can't event trust your own colleagues and friends! And don't complain about privacy.
